Latest Photo Shoot: Conquered Rain & 20MPH Winds

Wow! It was CRAZY in So. Cal today! 20-24 MPH winds, rain that didn't know what it wanted to do, and I even heard it was hailing a few miles south of our photo shoot! We had considered postponing this session for next weekend, but the weather seemed to be lifting...according to my eyes and the weather channel. So we figured, what the hay...lets shoot! We drove on to the park in Hanford, and as soon as we made our exit -- RAIN! Pouring down RAIN! Unreal! We decided to keep on -- just because it was raining at 11th avenue, didn't mean it was raining a few streets down and to the right. Haha, I was right! Bright yellow sun and beautiful blue skies were waiting for us...and 20 MPH chilly chilly wind! We got out and let the kiddos run around -- we were out of the woods...right? Haha, not quite. After about 20 minutes of shooting, the rain came back. Luckily, there was a little monster tunnel that I was able to slip my camera into to protect it from the rain. There was also cover above, and after the rain let up into sprinkles, I figured we might as well shoot the kids in the tunnel!

A few minutes later the rain was gone, the sun was shining, the wind stopped, and it was WARM! Yes, thats right...warm! Mom ran the jackets back to the truck and we resumed the shoot without any further weather interruptions. It was so worth it, and we all had a great time! Photo Contest & March Promo

Hey all! I've come up with my first small photo contest for this year...and the winner will receive a stunning 16x20 mounted photograph of their choice, from their 2009 session! Yay! So, here's the plan:

For everyone who has or will have a session from January 2009 until May 2009 will be able to enter their favorite image of their child (one entry per child) into the contest, or can leave the choosing up to me ... OR ... they may choose a group shot of their children to place into the contest. I will set up a gallery on my MySpace page with each entry, as they are chosen.

At the end of the contest, I will place all entries here on my blog for voting. To be fair, the voting will not begin until June 1st, 2009 and will end June 15th, 2009. The winner will be announced via my blog on June 16th, 2009. The family of the winning portrait will be able to choose their 16x20 after that date!

Bye, Bye Rain...Hello Family Photo Shoot

I had the pleasure of spending last Saturday with a really fun family, at Freedom Park in Hanford -- that place rocks! I had photographed the kiddos last year for their school pics -- 5 Times The Fun, but had yet to get mom in there (except her legs) - see below:

So, we figured it was time for another session. Try as we may, we were not able to catch dad -- next time, for sure! :) Here is mom, beautiful as ever:

Their kiddos are just amazing and full of life! The little one especially -- I just cannot get enough of her. Mom told me just before we left, that she had been wanting a picture of her tongue -- which is apparently heart shaped. Well, she wouldn't cooperate, but I found one as I was viewing the session in Bridge:

Of course, she became sorta cranky towards the end, but her mood changed when she saw a man in a motorized parachute, soaring through the sky. She would get so sad when he disappeared, and asked "Where'd he go?":

But was mesmerized when he reappeared:

Now last time, the boys were rather shy. But this time, as soon as they got out of their mom's car, they went crazy! "Can you take a picture of me like this? How about over here?" Her oldest son was crackin' me up -- apparently, he had just gotten a hair cut -- I couldn't see his eyes, so his little bro decided to help us out out:

Her youngest son was even willing to take some shots with his sister -- totally rad, he even picked the spot...inside this small little tunnel:

Robyn's Sporting a New Hair Cut & Do

We've been telling Robyn since she was little, you have to wait until you turn 5 years old to get a haircut! Well, she turned 5...and has been waiting, ever so patiently. So, we took her to Kelly at the Irwin Street Salon to get her first-ever hair cut! She was soooooo stoked!!! Here are a few shots from the salon:

Then this afternoon was rainy and yucky, so she wanted mommy to do her hair all pretty-like -- I busted our the curling iron, and gave her some "Shirley Temple" like locks (and they stayed, w/o hairspray, b/c her hair is naturally curl-crazy)! :) She looks too cute with all those curls!!! Helping Gryphon - Donated Photo Session - Dinner Auction & Fundraiser

A few months before my daughter turned 2, I realized that something wasn't quite right with her speech -- she never really spoke, aside from saying "mama", yet her comprehension was way up there. Tired of hearing the same "all kids are different" rant, I went with my gut, and demanded a speech evaluation. I was referred to UCP of Central California, a state-funded organization that offers early intervention for children (ages birth-3 years) with special needs. I am happy to say that my daughter has thrived there. I can't explain how it felt the first time she told me, "I love you mommy."
My husband and I are blessed, and thankful to all of her teachers and therapists for what they have done for our little girl.

While attending her therapy sessions, my husband and I met another family, whose story just tugged at our hearts. Just as many newborn babies, their son was diagnosed with Jaundice. However, the severity of his case we never knew -- within a few days, the Jaundice had attacked the portion of his brain that affects his hearing and motor development. More recently, he was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, and his family is doing everything they can to fight for him. They are currently in the process of raising $50,000 for stem cell treatments from donated cord blood, as well as physical therapy, in China. So far, they have raised approximately $32,000 dollars.

Last week, I found out that the family is having a Dinner Auction & Fundraiser, in honor of their son, Gryphon, on February 28th of this year. While carrying on the usual conversations, it was suggested that I donate a photo session to their event -- what an awesome idea!!!! I feel grateful that I was asked, and grateful that I can help...even in some small, minor way. :)

Puddle Jumpin'

My kiddos have been after me for months to get them some rain boots and jackets, and even more so after they saw Zak's photo's of his kiddos jumpin' around in puddles on his blog BTW, you should totally check him out -- Zak Schwank Photo -- he's the raddest dude photographer I know!

I had a photo shoot on Valentine's Day, but had to stop off at the store for a few things. I decided to grab Robyn some new jeans while I was out, so I mosied on down to Old Navy. I hit the jackpot -- matching rain boots, jackets, and umbrellas...in their favorite colors to boot! :) The perfect V-day gift -- they were soooo stoked!

Of course, they put them on that afternoon, but no rain. :( Well, the rain has been hitting us rather hard lately, which means...you guessed it, PUDDLES! I took them out around town looking for the perfect puddle and set them loose! We had a blast -- here's a few shots from their puddle jumpin' adventure:

Bringin' Back the 80's Photo Shoot

Wow! Today was totally 80's (minus the big hair) AND totally rad! I've been wanting to do a session with some older kids to try out some new locations around downtown, and was lucky to have the opportunity to do so this afternoon! I told these gals I was looking for a punk-rockish style...and they delivered! I love how fads and styles seem to repeat themselves generation, after generation! What was cool in the 80's, was soooo not cool in the 90's or early 2000's, but the style definitely seems to be making a comeback (minus the crazy big hair). It's like a mix of the 60's, 70's, and 80's...with a fresh twist -- it's so fun and funky! Anyway, I know these girls were reallllly stoked about the shoot, and eager to see their pix, so here is a sneak peak from one location:

Family Photo Shoot -- Freedom Park

I spent my V-Day afternoon with some old friends and their kiddos, whom I had done a shoot with last year. I also just did a buddies shoot with their eldest daughter earlier this month -- they are all soooo much fun! I had yet to get the whole family together...until now!

I was having issues with the sun...of course, it just wouldn't cooperate with me (go figure). But hey, at least it didn't rain! Nevertheless, we had a great time, and shared a lot of laughs -- all I had to do to get Mom & Dad to smile was mention Facebook and Chocolate Syrup -- that made for a great series of shots! :) See below for my fave:

A Day in the Life of a 13 Year Old Girl

After posting that I had an opening due to a re-schedule, a friend jumped in to take the spot for her 13 year old daughter's birthday! So, I spent the day be-bopping around town with three fun gals! We had such a rad time -- first was the nail salon. Now, I am not the kind of girl who gets her nails done and what not, but it was interesting to see how they do those acrylic claws + designs that seem to be on so many women's fingers -- graphic designing for nails! Here's a few of the "teens":

After the nail salon, we just hopped around town, here and there, looking for rad photo digs...we hit the jackpot:

I think there will be much more to come from this rad area of town that we uncovered!!! Stay tuned!

Experimenting with Window Light

Rhylie, my youngest little girl, was standing on a chair next to me while I was doing some photo-editing on the Mac. She was peering out the window at the family of birds perched in our tree. She was so lost in thought, so I figured it was the perfect moment to grab my camera and photograph her -- the window light was just right -- her face was illuminated, and the light tapered off behind her -- it was beautiful. I'd never really used window light intentionally before, but I think the results are great! :) Here are a few of my favorite shots...

My Digital Paper Creation

I have been curious about mixing digital paper and photographs for a while now, and managed to find some awesome papers at Digital Designers -- lots of textures, overlays, brushes, etc. to choose from. I had no clue what I was doing, so I just grabbed 4 different paper sets, and started mixing and matching with paper sets from Cottage Arts. It took about 30 minutes of changing opacity, blending methods, and erasing certain parts before I came up with something I liked. Then, I layered the new creation over my little lion...err...I mean Rhylie. :) I think its neat...but I have much to learn!!! See below:

Couple Photographs of My 2 Favorite Gals

The girls and I decided to pass the time between sessions by testing out new places around our house to take pictures -- we came up with two -- inside the bed of daddy's truck, which is parked in front of our house, and right inside the garage!

It turns out, garages are perfect spots to take closeup's, or even full length shots. It was about 1:00 in the afternoon when we were doing this, and the light was soooo bright! I placed Robyn just inside my garage, enough so she wasn't all squinty-eyed, then stood far back from her and used my 70-200L f/2.8 IS to zoom in close. The result -- a nice, smooth, light gray background. See below:

The second is a shot of miss Rhylie sittin' on the bed of my hubby's monsterous truck! We were far enough from the house, that if I stood back in the middle of the street and zoomed up close with the same lens, I was able to get that nice background blur -- nice and creamy colored. See below:

Sunday Afternoon Photo Session

Late Afternoon Photo Session - Sneak Peak

I had a great time today -- hung at the park with an awesome family, watched their little one practically bury herself in the sand, tried quite hard to make their youngest son laugh, and succeeded in saving my butt from the alpha-male group of geese! The fun really came when we tried for a group photo -- their little girl REFUSED to leave her sand hill! So what did I do? I had the family gather around her and tried my best to keep myself from falling into the water (I'm known to be a bit clumsy)! ;) Here are a few from their session:

New Website & New Blog -- Launched

2008 was a very frustrating, invigorating, trying, and ever-so-rad year!

Groovy opportunities happened my way. I met awesome people. New friendships were forged.

My plate was definitely full...
I was being called numerous directions....
but found myself yearning for something else...something more.

I've been working on a B.S. in Hotel & Restaurant Management for a couple years now, and aspire to run an Inn/Bakery-Bistro later on down the road. That is my future...I think -- jury is still out on that one. Towards the end of '08, I realized that my other passion, photographing life and family, needed to be my "right now".

I have always loved to photograph people and life, but more so since my husband and I had our first little girl. I felt this strong desire to capture every moment, so that we could look back and see our lives - how we changed, how we grew, how we laughed and loved and lived. Time passes us all by too quickly, and before we know it, they will be off to explore this great big world we live in.

One of my greatest reasons for capturing the everyday moments in our lives, is knowing that when my memory fails me (as it will with age), and after I'm gone, my photographs will speak for me. My children will be able to look back through their childhood, remember the good times, share a few laughs, cry a few tears, and be able to share in that with their children. When loved ones pass, they will have photographs to remember them by. Not the "say cheese" photographs, but photographs of their lives, as they truly were.

It started with a desire to do so for my family, but I felt this drive to do the same for other families as well. And then, barefoot photography LIFE. CAPTURED. was born.

I am so very stoked that I am finally launching my new website & blog!!! I spent much of my holiday downtime (well, that is when my girls were sleeping) playing around with with the site before I nailed what I wanted. And now, here it is!!!

So, here is to whatever 2009 may bring!

Awesome Family

I met up with an awesome family last Sunday -- total blast! Their little girl is about 15 months, and is in that learning to walk and talk stage! She is quite the jabber jaws - answering my questions with "Yes" and "What" and "Hmmm" - it was tooooo cute! We had a great talk while I followed her around, yes...followed. She was not about to stand still, much less sit down, in order for me to get a shot. So, we followed her around the entire park, which is huge! These are a few of my faves from the afternoon:

5 Wonderful Years - Happy Birthday Baby!!!!

Robyn turned 5 on New Years Eve Day (11:34 AM CST) - I cried. I remember her as a baby like it was yesterday...and now she's five years old!!! When asked how it felt to be a whole year older, she said "Mom, it feels great! (pause for thought) Actually...you know, I really, really, really LOVE being five!" I took the gal's out for ice cream (Rhy, Chy, and Rob), then off to Claire's to find some cool jewelry, then off to the bookstore (we can't visit the mall without popping in there) for some new reads, then Aunt Annie's Pretzels (per Rob's request), then back home for some cupcakes and presents (while the grandparents watched on Skype). It was a fabulous day! We spent New Years Eve at home playing guitar hero and singstar, dancing around in our jammie's, and being silly. We toasted with Apple-Grape Cider and watched the ball drop - played around some more, then hopped into bed around 2AM - WOW - what a day/night!

The 4-Foot Tree

These Boots Were Made for Walking...

I bought my daughter her first pair of boots when she was about 2.5 years old - they were too big for her then, but they just didn't come any smaller. Forget tennis shoes - she was in love with her boots! She wore them with everything - dresses, shorts, dance leotards, dress up clothes, pajamas - and yes, even when she runs around in her under-roos! Come rain, shine, mud, sand, the beach, bike-riding, walks, or dressing up for a date with mom or dad...she had to wear her boots (and they still don't stink)!

She has worn that same pair of boots up until a few months ago, when her foot finally decided it couldn't fit anymore (good thing mom bought two pairs in different sizes)! Now, the old pair belongs to my youngest (1.5 sizes too big) - she was thrilled the day Rob said she could wear her old boots! :) I came across this photo the other day, and thought to myself - "Best $16.50 I have ever spent!" Have a look-see:

The girls and I headed up to the San Fran area for a photo shoot with my rad friend Dara and her amazingly funny son, Chris. As soon as we got to the beach, it "The Nothing" rolled in, and we had to cancel the shoot! For those of you who don't know what "The Nothing" is...picture a giant cloud of gloom and doom - or - go watch The Never Ending Story, and you will totally get what I'm talking about! So, we went early the next morning for some surf, sand, and sun! It was awesome!

The oldest girl wants to be a model when she grows up, or so she told me! :) The little boy, well...he is just too cute for words! I recently went to see a concert in Lakeside...and stayed with a friend in Carlsbad. Being that close, I just had to stop at the beach. It was phantastic! We planned on staying only a few minutes, as I had to get home to my kiddos. Well, needless to say...it's the beach...it turned into an hour or so! :) Here are a few photographs I snagged while I was there. Enjoy!

5 Times the Fun

This family was an absolute blast! The goal - school pictures! Now, most people think of school pictures in the same way - ugh! They don't have to be that way!!!! We had such a great time and I just snapped away whether they were paying attention or not! We spent a good couple hours in the park, relaxing, talking, and being silly. The girls were all for it, the boys...well, it took a little more effort on my part. Shutter Speed -VS - Blinking ... We were trying to see who was faster, the shutter...or their eyes. Hah, that was fun! I won every time! The baby was a riot! This little girl can really bust a move, and she is not even 2! Anything her sister would do, she would imitate! You start a rhythm, she would bounce to it. Definitely made things interesting! I cannot wait to do this again!!! They are fantastic!

My Very First "Official" Photo Shoot

A few months ago, I had the pleasure of photographing the Kingsbury children, all of whom my husband has known practically since birth! It was the best first “official” photo session I could have asked for! They were just a joy to be around - so kind, cooperative, fun, happy - they really seemed to pull together for some brotherly/sisterly love! I was more than thrilled with our outcome, and each of the kiddos immediately had their favs when I displayed them - they were totally stoked!

I have known this family since 2004, when their son was still in diapers! Fast forward 4 years - he is in First Grade now! It is amazing how time flies! They have really grown into themselves - their own unique personalities just shown through during the session! It was a joy to be able to get real smiles out of each of them, but especially their son - mom was beyond thrilled with his pictures - his entire face was lit up! I feel honoured that I was able to capture these moments for them!

A Beautiful Day, A Beautiful Girl

Ok, so I totally just started blogging here, and I thought...why not post a few really fun sessions that I had over the past few months! This particular session was rad! I had the privilege of photography the most amazing little 3 year old, Miss JiNa’Zi Rene Jacobs! I have known this little girl since she was practically a baby! She was born 1 year and a few hours after my oldest, Robyn! They are best pals for life, sharing a birthday and all! Anyway, she is so full of life - I don’t believe anything could or would ever get her down! She has so much love and energy to share with the world - this girl has a very special place in my heart!

She may be a little firecracker atjavascript:void(0) times, but who could resist her love and charm? Her attitude and excitement about the shoot made my day! She was so excited to come out to the park with me and her “Ya Ya” for her session - ready, willing, and full of giggles and smiles! She picked out where she wanted to take pictures and as soon as I pulled out the camera, she was pulling out poses left and right! The girl obviously knew what she wanted from the session - and she’s only 3 years old! Well, soon to be four!
